After years of journaling my days fly fishing the Greater Yellowstone region, I realized the value this information could bring other anglers. In the journal, I tell the story of my fishing trips and go into detail on what techniques worked for me. I detail the weather, water types, flies, and other important information that led to my success or failure. I go over what I learned from the trip and pose questions about what I left the water curious about.

Fly fishing from a pontoon boat on Yellowstone Lake

Exploring Yellowstone Lake With a Fly Rod

June 3rd, 2023 Yellowstone Lake is not only the biggest lake in Yellowstone National Park (YNP) but is also the largest high-elevation lake in North America. It has an average depth of 140 feet and 141 miles of shoreline. Cold water temperatures will give you hypothermia in minutes and nasty weather is almost guaranteed. Why would I venture out on the lake in a small pontoon boat all alone? Yellowstone Lake is home to my favorite

Camping on Memorial Day Weekend

May 27 and 28th, 2023 Memorial Day and camping go hand in hand. It is also an important weekend in fly fishing as it signals the opening weekend for many of our western watersheds, including the opening of the Yellowstone National Park fishing season. I spent Saturday and Sunday camping and fishing at Hebgen Lake near the fishy town of West Yellowstone. This area is a fly fisher’s paradise. With so many legendary fisheries, fly

First Stillwater Trip of The Year

May 21, 2023 Sunday opened up and I was lucky enough to take the day to chase some trout. Some of my favorite lakes in the area are finally ice-free and fishing well, so I decided to try my luck fishing some Stillwater. Spoiler alert, it did not disappoint.   I’ve grown to love fishing alone over the past few years. The solitude, freedom, and fishing on my terms is such a rewarding experience. I

Mother’s Day Caddis

May 12th, 2023 It’s been a long-awaited hatch season here in southwest Montana. The long winters can be hard to bear and I don’t blame the people who leave for warmer weather states during these months. Though a few days through the winter can be hard, the few months of sunburns, bugs, and wet wading mean so much more after a long winter.    The Mother’s Day caddis hatch is the start of the summer

Winter Recap 2023

While it is currently snowing as I write this blog post, it is safe to say we are finally seeing spring fishing conditions on many of the famous waters here in the Yellowstone region. If you live in the area, you know it has been a cold, snowy winter compared to the past few. This made for less-than-ideal fishing conditions many days over the last few months but should lead to some amazing water conditions

Birthday Float on the Henrys Fork

April 15th, 2023 I look forward to the middle of April as it not only signals a change of season here in the greater Yellowstone region, but it is also my birthday. My fiancé and I make the trip down to Ashton, Idaho to celebrate with her family. It turns out her father’s birthday is the day after mine, so we celebrate the only way we know how, fishing. It’s always special being able to

Skwala’s Means It’s Spring

April 7th – 9th, 2023 As you may know, it has been a good winter here in Montana. The second we begin to think we are out of the cold, another storm rolls through that puts a few more inches of snow on the ground and delays spring fishing for a couple of days. This easter weekend was calling for a high in the 50’s so I took advantage of my three-day weekend to do
